Christmas and gift giving

Introduction

The meaning of Christmas

Many individuals, families and groups in society understand Christmas in different ways. For me, the “Christ” in Christmas reminds me of the day Jesus was born.

This day is significant because Jesus was God and he chose to live with us, sent to save us from the consequences of a choice to disobey a loving and merciful God thousands of years beforehand.

Since none of us were there when Adam and Eve chose to disobey God, we would not intuitively know that we needed saving from the consequences of their actions, but Jesus knew and as both a man and God offered his life, as a gift, to our Father in heaven to save us.

Alternatively, if humanity tried to offer a gift to reconcile ourselves with God the Father what gift would we have that would be of infinite value to repay someone who was infinite and created anything that we would offer.

When I reflect on the events around Christmas and Easter, I understand that neither I, nor all humanity, could pay the price needed. But Jesus could, as the sacrifice of the second person of the Trinity, to the first person, God the Father. Jesus, one thing that God did not create.

Although the summary above does not describe the mystery of Christmas fully, it tries to offer an explanation why the day is so important in the Catholic Christian tradition.

As a result, Jesus’ birth can lead us, like the three wise men who went to see, adore and give gifts to baby Jesus, to share our joy with gifts to others — especially at Christmas.

Around the world, people with a similar understanding, celebrate the day for the same reason, however, not everyone knows the reason for the season in this way.

Instead, during Christmas, others might enjoy the day as a holiday, or a time to share with family and friends, and even to resolve issues that kept them apart during the year.

Maybe, with all the reasons above, the season is also known for peace and joy.

Gift giving

Even though every person is unique, there are celebrations and gifts that we might share in common, such as:

  • attending Christmas carols together during Advent,
  • going to Mass on Christmas day,
  • spending meaningful time with family and friends,
  • sharing the joy with hugs,
  • sharing meals and praying with others,
  • helping those in need around us,
  • putting up decorations in preparation of Christmas and
  • making gifts to share with others.

In addition to these celebrations and gifts, our modern-day society has influenced Christmas allowing some to buy and give gifts from one or more shops rather than making presents themselves.

When we buy a gift to give, maybe we can remember why we are doing so, consider our current situation and think of the person we are buying for. Finding a balance between these during the Christmas season can bring joy instead of being a burden, buying for the sake of appearances or for its own sake.

With those thoughts in mind, this post offers a guide on how to use our virtual shop trolley. In a way, like walking through a shopping mall, past many stores, to find gifts that will suit your budget and still have meaning for the one receiving the present this Christmas.
